Applicants can apply for either Deputy Sheriff or Deputy Sheriff Detentions/Courts,
or apply for both. Applications can ONLY be accepted online.
You will only take one written exam for both positions, so we suggest you
apply for both. There is no math or essay on our written exam. The test contains
grammar, reading comprehension, and sentence structure.
Your score will be applied to either or both positions for which you have
applied. You will be placed on an eligibility list according to how well you score.
The higher you score, the higher you will be placed on the eligibility list.
TO REGISTER: Upon submitting your application, County of San Diego Department of Human
Resources will review your application to make sure you meet the minimum qualifications.
Upon meeting the minimum qualifications, you will receive an email inviting you to register
for the exam, (this process could take up to six weeks). That email notice will have
instructions on how to register for the written exam. It’s one exam for both
positions, so register for one exam only!
THE SAN DIEGO SHERIFF’S RECRUITING UNIT NO LONGER HANDLES EXAM REGISTRATIONS.
CONTACT DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES FOR HELP ON HOW TO REGISTER AT (619) 236-2191.
You WILL NOT be able to register for an exam until your application has been submitted,
processed, and you have received an email from DHR on how to register.

If you have been advised to self-schedule a written exam but are unable to do so, we are aware of this issue and are currently
working together with the Department of Human Resources to produce more test dates. You are encouraged to log in to the county
