The San Diego Sheriff’s Office honors the men and women of our nation’s armed forces. We know that it takes an exceptional type of individual to put personal interests on hold and serve our nation abroad. We know individuals who serve in the military abide by the guiding principles of honor, integrity, loyalty, trust, respect and justice. To serve in the military, one must have determination, resilience, a strong work ethic and uncompromising commitment. That is why our agency values military experience. Veterans and active-duty military personnel, by and large, already have the high moral character and strong work ethic that are critical for the effective and just enforcement of our laws.
We also know that the transition back to civilian life is not easy. Selecting the right career, especially in a slow economy, can quickly become a daunting task. The San Diego Sheriff’s Office might just be your answer. In addition to great pay and benefits, the Sheriff's Office offers numerous job assignments, specialized positions and opportunities to advance your career. We can offer you the opportunity to not only use your acquired skill set but also continue your service to this great country at home.
We have made the transition smoother by offering veterans the following benefits:
- Veterans interested in preference points need to email their long-form DD-214 to jobs@sdcounty.ca.gov for evaluation/eligibility.
- If you have a service-connected disability, you may be eligible for disability points.
- If you are eligible for the VA GI Bill, you can earn a salary while receiving on-the-job training.
- After the academy, reservists receive gap pay coverage while deployed or in military training.
- Reservists will also receive thirty paid days of leave for military training.
- If you are in the reserves and are deployed, you will earn vacation, sick time and compensatory time. The time you are deployed counts towards your years of service.
- Our command structure is similar to the military. The familiarity makes for a smoother transition.
